The Crucifixion of Christ (fol. 60v)
Description
The miniature depicts Christ crucified on the cross. Mary Magdalene, richly clad in a green dress, an orange cloak and a head-dress covered in jewels, clutches the cross with her arms. Her ointment jar lies on the ground beside her. The Virgin Mary, St. John and three female figures stand behind Mary Magdalene. On the other side of the cross, the blind Longinus, on horseback, approaches with a spear, accompanied by two soldiers. There are more soldiers on horseback in the background. The city of Jerusalem is visible behind. Skulls and bones lie on the ground. The miniature is surrounded by a border divided into diamonds with contrasting background colours of gold, blue and red, decorated with roses, pinks, heartsease, a pimpernel, acanthus leaves and a butterfly. Context: Hours of the Holy Cross
