The Stressed Vowels in the Dialects of Longtown, Abbey Town and Hunsonby (Cumberland): A Structural Approach
Description
A dissertation investigating the dialects of three villages, Longtown, Abbey Town and Hunsonby, in the old county of Cumberland, and submitted for the Degree of PhD at the University of Basel. The study is based on material recorded in the villages in 1953 and 1954 for the Survey of English Dialects, and the collector's own (written) fieldwork recordings made in 1964 and 1965 (four informants each in Longtown and Abbey Town, and two in Hunsonby). The collector referred to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire to elicit information during his first visit, and used his own questionnaire sheets during his second visit to the villages a year later. The thesis comprises five sections. An Introduction presents information on the localities, the local dialects, the collection of material, the phonetic analysis and the phonemic interpretation of the material gathered. Sections two to four record the phonemes and their phonetic realisations, and the classification of the phonemes, for each of the three localities. The final section presents a summary of the results of the phonetic and phonemic analyses, with sections comparing the vowel systems, recording the most frequent phonetic realisations and the distribution of the vowel phonemes within the vocabulary.
