A Study in Structural Dialectology

Description

A study based on data selected from the Survey of English Dialects' (SED) published material for Read in Lancashire (fieldworker, Stanley Ellis, 1954), and Spofforth in the old West Riding of Yorkshire (fieldworker, Peter Wright, 1950). The thesis assesses what powers Structural Dialectology has as an analytical tool, by applying it to a comparison of the stressed vowel systems of the two dialects. The thesis was submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Linguistics, Brown University, June 1970. The thesis comprises seven sections. The first contains a literature review, followed by sections on the development of theory (including the work of Uriel Weinreich), the selection of the data from the SED, phonemicization, lexical correspondences, evaluation of lexical correspondences and conclusions. The file also contains a note from the author to Stanley Ellis, regarding her proposed visit to Leeds in June 1970.
