The West Midlands as a Dialect Area: A Phonological, Lexical, and Morphological Investigation Based on the Survey of English Dialects

Description

A study of the dialects of the West Midlands, based on fieldwork data collected in the region for the Survey of English Dialects (SED), and published as 'Survey of English Dialects', [edited] by Harold Orton and Eugen Dieth. [Section] B, 'The Basic Material'. Vol. 2, pts. 1-3, 'The West Midland Counties', edited by Harold Orton and Michael V. Barry (Leeds: Published for the University of Leeds by E. J. Arnold, 1969-1971) . The doctoral dissertation was submitted to the University of Basel in 1992. The dissertation comprises eight sections. The Introduction presents an overview of English dialect studies, with reference to the work of the nineteenth century scholars, Louis Lucien Bonaparte, Alexander Ellis and Joseph Wright. The second section introduces the Survey of English Dialects and its methods of data collection. Section three describes the methods employed by the author of the present study in selecting the relevant questions from the SED for analysis. The fourth section considers the dialect boundaries established by S. Moore, S. B. Meech and H. Whitehall in the 1930s, and their equivalents in the SED. Further sections present detailed analyses of accent, lexicon and morphology. Section Eight provides an evaluation of the study, and an Appendix includes information on maps used, SED fieldworkers and network of localities.
