Vowel Pronunciation in the Yorkshire Dales
Description
A study of vowel pronunciation in the speech of people living in the Yorkshire Dales, based on fieldwork data collected during July 1982 through tape-recorded interviews with thirty informants in five localities ( Askrigg, Pateley Bridge, Horton in Ribblesdale, Gargrave and Grassington). The data were obtained with the aid of a questionnaire comprising sixty-seven of the original 1,200 questions making up the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, used for the Survey of English Dialects (SED). The fieldwork locations selected were five of the original SED localities, which enabled the comparison of the 1982 data with the SED data, and the drawing of conclusions on the changes that had taken place in the dialect in the intervening thirty-year period. The thesis was written for the Doctoraal examination, at the Institute of English Language and Literature, University of Utrecht, June 1983. The thesis is divided into five sections. The first offers an introduction to the Survey of English Dialects and the five chosen localities. The second section describes the collectors' research methods, fieldwork and transcription of data. Section Three presents the results of the survey, with sections detailing individual phonemes, Standard English pronunciations used per phoneme in relation to each informant's total number of answers, and percentage figures for the amount of Received Pronunciation spoken, by sex, in the answers for each locality. The fourth section discusses and concludes on pronunciations, age and dialect, sex and dialect. Four appendices contain the questions used in the study; phonetic transcriptions of the original SED lexical items, followed by the transcribed answers of the six (1982) informants per village; tables showing changes in the dialect; and informants' biographical data sheets.
