The Application of Phonetics and Phonology to Foreign Language Teaching
Description
A thesis which addresses the question of how knowledge derived from phonetic and phonological study can be applied to the teaching and learning of foreign language pronunciation. And how such an application can contribute to the improvement of the pronunciation standards of foreign language learners as well as to methods of pronunciation teaching. The thesis was submitted for the Degree of M.A. in the Language Centre, University of Sheffield, in February 1976. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the principles of phonetics and phonology in general terms, and discusses the relationship that holds between them. The second chapter considers the contribution of phonetic and phonological study towards the training of foreign language teachers. Chapter Three assesses what phonetics and phonology can offer to the foreign language learner, and suggests the benefits lie in the describing of the pronunciation system of the target language, comparing the sound system of the foreign language with that of the student's mother tongue, and in providing a pronunciation learning method. The final chapter illustrates some of the methods and techniques that can be used in testing the pronunciation skill (including methods advocated by Robert Lado, Rebecca Valette and David P. Harris.
