A Study of Language and Folklore in Batley and Surrounding Areas

Description

A Special Study submitted as part of an unidentified course at Eaton Hall College of Education, Retford, in 1971. The study comprises a collection of folklore items, gathered from eleven informants living in Batley, Birstall, Scarborough, Dewsbury and Cleckheaton. These examples are presented in six chapters, with accompanying comments, descriptions and explanations by the collector. The subject areas covered comprise custom, belief and superstition; local sayings; children's lore and language; similes; dialect, pronunciation, word derivation and nicknames. A glossary of common words and phrases, a Tape Table of Contents for an open reel tape recording which accompanies the original study, and a list of informants, are included.
