The Romance of Sassi: A Critical and Comparative Study
Description
A study of the Indian tragic romance legend of 'Sassi Punnun', submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Indian Lore and Literature) in the Arts Faculty of the University of London, through the School of Oriental and African Studies. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part presents an analytical study of the legend, assessing various aspects of its influence and significance, and examining its title, origin and period. This part also includes a study of the topography of the regions in India where the actual event upon which the legend is purportedly based occurred. Further sections examine the characters, motifs, supernatural elements and folklore associated with the legend. The second part offers a critical survey of the legend's oral and literary traditions, and presents a study of a number of bardic and literary versions from regions in India and beyond. These are arranged under separate language sections, with each containing a brief account of geographical and historical aspects, cultural, linguistic and literary traditions of the region concerned. The final section reviews the manifestation of the romance in popular forms, and assesses its success and popularity through the modern media of the cinema and radio. The review concludes with an examination of the contribution made by painters towards the legend's popularity and preservation through pictorial art. A Glossary explains some indigenous words and technical terms.
