Craven Yorkshire Dialect
Description
A doctoral dissertation which analyses descriptions of Yorkshire dialects, recorded by William Carr in his 'Horæ Momenta Cravenæ, or, The Craven Dialect' (London: Hurst, Robinson and Co., 1824) and 'The Dialect of Craven' (Leeds: Robinson and Hernaman, 1828), and in the Survey of English Dialects' (SED) published volume, 'The Basic Material'. Vol. 1, pts. 1-3, 'The Six Northern Counties and the Isle of Man', edited by Harold Orton and Wilfred J. Halliday (Leeds: Published for the University of Leeds by E. J. Arnold, 1962-1964).The study was submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics in the Graduate School of Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, December 1976. The study examines the work of William Carr and his description of Craven dialect in Bolton Abbey, in order to determine whether it was constructed with sufficient accuracy, consistency, and with adequate corpus to yield a minimal phonological analysis, primarily of the vowels. It also examines critically the data collected through the SED in the localities nearest to Carr's study (namely, Grassington and Gargrave), to determine whether the data is sufficient to submit to a structural phonological analysis, so that it may be utilised as a tool for the analysis of the older study. The present study shows that the SED data will yield to a structural analysis, but only if all data available is used, rather than just the data indicated as phonologically important. It also shows that it is possible to interpret a dialect description from the pre-phonetic era, but that a purely internal analysis of the older material is not possible. The study comprises six chapters. An introduction to the area of study and the district of Craven is followed by an assessment of the North - North-Midland dialect boundary, a description and critique of the SED, a description of the author's methodology and data analysis, and descriptions and comparisons of the consonants and vowels in the dialects of the two SED localities. A fifth chapter focusses on Carr's work, with sections on the analysis of his data, and individual spellings. The final chapter offers some concluding remarks. The first of two appendices contains a sample page from the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire, and sample phonetic environment sheets from the SED data. The second appendix contains photocopies of the first three pages from Carr's two books, and sample pages from the Glossary in both 1824 and 1828 editions.
