Conistone Survey of Vernacular Architecture
Description
This file contains items relating to a survey of vernacular architecture around Conistone( Wharfedale), undertaken by students on the Museums Association Diploma Curatorial Course in Folk Life and Local History, hosted by the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS) in July 1971. The file includes two typed copies of the survey report, with ms. diagrams/illustrations; ms. notes used to compile the final report in seven different hands; ms. notes, photocopied ms. maps of buildings/area surveyed, and specially prepared recording sheets completed in ms. with details of buildings surveyed; extra ms. maps, ms. and typed notes on buildings surveyed, and recording sheet with ms. details of a lathe; and two copies of Ordnance Survey 1:10,560 map, sheet SD 96 NE, Conistone with Kilnsey, marked in ms. with the area surveyed, and buildings surveyed. The buildings surveyed are all in the north-eastern part of Conistone and date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They include a school, a lathe-house, a dwelling house, a lathe, a house with a 20th century wing added, Ivy Cottage, and a storage barn. The recording sheets are the same as those developed by R. W. Brunskill for recording the details of various types of English vernacular architecture, and found in his 'Illustrated Handbook of Vernacular Architecture' . File arranged as found.
