Description
This file contains items relating to buildings and construction techniques, and includes photocopies of maps showing the location of aisle-trusses in Welsh buildings, and aisled buildings in Yorkshire and East Lancashire, from 'Vernacular Architecture', volume 4 (1973), pp. 26 and 29; maps of England, Wales and Southern Scotland showing the distribution of various types of cruck, from 'A Catalogue of Cruck Buildings', compiled by N. W. Alcock (London: Phillimore for the Vernacular Architecture Group, 1973), figs. 2-7; an ms. diagram of a cruck-frame; Trudy West's articles, 'Houses With Long Back and Sides' (on thatched cottages), extracted from 'Ideal Home' magazine (August 1971), and 'Pargetting' (on a decorative plasterwork technique), extracted from 'Ideal Home' magazine (January 1972); an article by J. E. Manners on the re-thatching of a tithe-barn at Tisbury, Wiltshire, extracted from 'Country Life' (18 November 1971), pp. 1403-1404; N. T. Fryer's article on vernacular architecture in the Weald (in particular timber-framed houses), extracted from 'Country Life' (10 August 1967), pp. 320-321; and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from 'Country Life' and the 'Yorkshire Post', on thatching tools, staddle stones, the rebuilding of a medieval house from Danby at the Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton-le-Hole, vernacular buildings from Boughbeech, Kent, moved to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, masonry joints and garretting, the thatching of Westleton Church (East Suffolk), bone decorations and a witchert house, and the tradition of placing spoons in building walls. Many of the cuttings are largely illustrative. File contents retained in original classification order, and chronologically within this.
