Saddler's Vice
Description
Mr. Denis Barningham working leather with a saddler's vice, or clam, used by his grandfather, outside his carpenter's shop in Reeth ( Swaledale). The clam is used for gripping the leather, holding it tight, and keeping it from slipping, while strong waxed thread is guided through the holes made in a leather horse collar with an awl. In this photograph, Mr. Barningham is making a stitch with a waxend. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1426. With ms. note. Originally held in Photo File: Papermaking, Skin and Leatherwork.
