Shoemaker's Vice
Description
Mr. T. Hunter (retired shoemaker, saddler, cobbler and clogmaker) working leather with the aid of a shoemaker's vice, or clam, Redmire ( Wensleydale). The shoemaker's vice is an implement made of two tapering pieces of wood which fit into a wooden handle. The two blades are adjusted by a screw so that they become more bowed as the screw is driven in, with the result that their outer ends press more tightly together. Mr. Hunter sits on a shoemaker's bench which was over 150 years old at the time of photographing. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1422. With ms. notes. Originally held in Photo File: Papermaking, Skin and Leatherwork.
