Saddler's Vice
Description
Mr. Denis Barningham working leather with a saddler's vice, or clam, used by his grandfather, outside his carpenter's shop in Reeth ( Swaledale). The clam is used for gripping the leather, holding it tight and keeping it from slipping, while strong waxed thread is guided through the holes made in the leather with an awl. In this photograph, Mr. Barningham is putting a pricker through a horse's headcollar. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1423. With ms. note. Originally held in Photo File: Papermaking, Skin and Leatherwork.
