Cheesemaking: Cheese Press

Description

Mrs. M. E. Scott putting a chessput, or vat, full of curd into a cheesepress, outside her home, West Stonesdale ( Swaledale). The cheese press is a specialised lever press made of metal, which dates from the mid-late 19th century. The curd will be pressed for two days. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1539. With typed note, and ms. diagram of a Nidderdale cheese press after Joseph Lucas' 'Studies in Nidderdale' (London; Pateley Bridge: E. Stock, [1882]). Card 21 in a series of 27.
