Photographic Collections
Description
This subfonds comprises the photographic collections held at the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS), and includes photographs, slides, negatives and microfilm. The Folk Life Survey embraced an active policy of collecting photographic images of aspects of material culture, folklife and folklore in Britain, with a focus on Yorkshire. Much of the content of the Photographic Prints collection, which amounts to over 2100 individual images, was collected as a result of this. Also represented amongst the Photographic Prints collection are images collected by IDFLS staff and students. The majority of the images are black and white. The Slide collection comprises photographic images relating to material culture, folklife and folklore in Britain, Norway and Sweden; slides of experimental linguistic maps and Survey of English Dialects-related data; and slides of texts and maps which were probably employed for teaching purposes. The collection consists of both black and white, and colour images. Slide copies of some of the images in the Photographic Prints collection are included. The Slide collection as a whole consists of a range of formats, including lantern and glass slides in various sizes. The Photographic Negatives collection largely consists of negative copies of images and linguistic maps represented in the Photographic Prints and Slide collections. A variety of formats are represented, including glass plate negatives and various forms of negative film. The Microfilm collection includes microfilm copies of documents relating to student theses. Detailed descriptions of these collections are provided at series level.
