Description
This file contains original and copy correspondence, and related papers, concerning Stewart Sanderson's activities as an academic folklorist. Its contents seem to have been selected by Sanderson for deposit in the University of Leeds Archive, and include some contextual ms. notes added by Sanderson around October 1983. The first section of the file consists of correspondence and related papers concerning the funding of the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS), its staff and its publications. This includes a typed press notice from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundationon grants (July 1960); a copy of a paper submitted to the Pilgrim Trust by Charles Morris (September 1961); correspondence relating to Stanley Burton's gift of a subscription to the journal 'Amateur Historian' to the IDFLS (March 1964); correspondence with Dorothy McGrigor Phillips on the development of a folklore library at the IDFLS (November-December 1965); correspondence with A. Norman Jeffares on proposals for an IDFLS-based monograph series (December 1965); and correspondence with Yorkshire Television regarding financial support for 'The Linguistic Atlas of England' (LAE) (January 1968). The second section includes correspondence with Vice Chancellors, including Charles Morris and Roger Stevens, during the period February 1961-June 1980. The subject matter of this correspondence includes the development of the Folk Life Survey (including Sanderson's undated typed proposal for the study of Yorkshire folklife and the creation of folklife collections at the IDFLS), a copy of Harold Orton and A. Norman Jeffares' proposal for the inception of Folklore Studies at Leeds (November 1959), the Society for Folk Life Studies conference at Bodington Hall in 1963; correspondence with Iorwerth C. Peate of the Welsh Folk Museum at St. Fagan's on Folk Life Studies at Leeds (February 1966); Harold Orton's honorary degree from Uppsala University (1969); a resolution from the Conference on Anglo-American Folklore deriding the state of Folklife Studies at British Universities other than Leeds; the conferment of degrees; and the opening of the Orton Research Room in June 1980, including a typed draft of a speech for the Pro-Vice-Chancellor. The third section consists chiefly of a selection of copy correspondence from Sanderson to the Bursar concerning the payment of accounts from October 1961-May 1970. This includes requests for payment of and expenses for Werner Kissling, for his photographic work for the Folk Life Survey (June 1962-June 1966), and the payment of IDFLS staff, including Philip Tillingfor his work on the Survey of English Dialects (SED). The fourth section relates to press conferences and publications. This includes a typed list of press representatives expected to attend the conference for the launch of the Southern Counties Basic Material (March 1967); a copy (annotated in ms. by Sanderson in 1983) of the speech made by Harold Ortonat the E. J. Arnold and Son Limited/University of Leeds SED Luncheon (1 October 1971), which marked the publication of the final parts of the SED Basic Material; and typed lists of invitations and acceptances to the lunch organised to mark the publication of The Linguistic Atlas of England (30 October 1978). The fifth, and largest, section of the file is most varied in its content, and relates to Sanderson's professional contact and involvement with folklife institutions and organisations outside the IDFLS. This includes correspondence with copies of proposals for Folk Life Studies at Leeds and the establishment of the IDFLS (1963); correspondence with the Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Public Buildings and Worksregarding the development of folk museums in Britain (October 1966); correspondence concerning the April 1973 meeting of the Anglo-Cameroon Mixed Commission, including a typed agenda, copies of the paper 'Review of Existing British Educational Assistance to Cameroon' and minutes of the meeting; correspondence with G. F. N. Reddaway at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office regarding Sanderson's trip to Khartoum, and with J. F. S. Phillips, British Ambassador to the Sudan (April-May 1974); a printed leaflet and typed programme for the Folk Life and Custom Summer School at Keele University, July 1970, organised by Keele University Department of Adult Education, the Folklore Society and the English Folk Dance and Song Society, and including a paper on the folklore of the motor car by Sanderson; a typed programme, report and list of participants from a visit of Swedish museums' staff to Britain in September 1974, arranged by the Museums Association and the British Council, and including a visit to the IDFLS; correspondence between Sanderson and Sir Keith Joseph on the issue of imposing VAT on learned societies, with particular reference to the Folklore Society, and a letter from the Treasury(February-April 1978); and correspondence relating to the UNESCO questionnaire on the protection of folklore, with a photocopy of the questionnaire as completed by Sanderson (October 1979). The last section of the file contains correspondence and papers relating to Sanderson's professional activities. This includes correspondence with Sir Compton Mackenzie(April 1964); a photocopy of an article from the 'Sheffield Morning Telegraph'on miners' superstitions, featuring Sanderson and publicising the IDFLS (15 October 1969); a newspaper cutting from 'The Guardian' on performances by the Bolton Octagon Theatre in pubs and working men's clubs, with reference to Sanderson (28 January 1970); correspondence with Edmund Williamson, once Bursar of the University of Leeds, on his photographs of sheep farming in Littondale and their deposit in the IDFLS Archive (March 1975) and other matters (March 1977; March 1978); and responses to dialect and folklore enquiries. Within the sections listed above, the correspondence in this file is arranged chronologically.
