Harold Orton - Correspondence
Description
Although separated into two physical file folders, these files were originally held as two folders within a single filing-cabinet file. The first file, originally labelled Harold Orton, contains a printed (proof?) copy of an address by Harold Orton in March 1960 on the Survey of English Dialects (SED), with his ms. corrections; a typed copy of a letter from Orton to E. J. Arnold and Son Limited regarding Eduard Kolb and his atlas (October 1961); copy correspondence from the Registrar to Orton regarding the wording of his position in the Southern Counties Basic Material volume (March 1966); and correspondence with Sanderson concerning the formation of an Linguistic Atlas of England (LAE) Editorial Committee (June 1967). The second file, originally labelled Professor H. Orton, consists largely of correspondence between Sanderson and Orton during Orton's visits to the United States. As such, it contains typed and ms. original, draft and copy correspondence, including some correspondence addressed to Orton but answered by Sanderson in his absence, and many letters from Orton on air-mail paper. This includes correspondence on the SED, reprinting of Basic Material volumes and the supply of volumes to Orton in the United States; general administrative matters; Eduard Kolb; and the production and publication of the LAE (April 1969-May 1973). Files arranged chronologically.
