Buttermaking: Cleaning Hands
Description
Mrs. M. E. Scott cleaning and preparing her hands for buttermaking, in her home, West Stonesdale ( Swaledale). Using very hot water, her hands are rubbed with oatmeal (soap would be tasted in the butter), then rinsed in hot water and plunged straight into cold water. Her hands will be kept cool throughout the buttermaking process by plunging them into cold water every so often, in order to prevent the butter from sticking to them. Mounted on Photo File card. With typed note. Card 6 in a series of 13. Originally held in Photo File: Buttermaking.
