Trailing for Bonfire Wood
Description
Copy of a photograph of a group of children, young and old, collecting (or trailing for) bonfire wood, Castle Bolton ( Wensleydale). Stone cottages, and the ruins of Bolton Castle are visible in the background. The fuel gathered in this photograph consists of tree branches. Fuel gathering for the bonfire in Castle Bolton (on 5 November) often started as early as September. A digital version of this photograph is held on the LAVC web pages. A visitor to these pages who once lived in Castle Bolton, was able to recognise the children in the photograph having grown up with them. They are (from left to right) Billy Horn, Malcolm Robinson, Raymond Hunter, Michael Bell, David Horn, Thomas Hunter, Ronnie Richardson, Mary Hunter (in front) and John Hunter (in front). Mounted on Photo File card. With ms. notes and catalogue details in the hand of Werner Kissling. Reference is made to a description of collecting wood for bonfires, or plot sticking, by Jim Peacock of Castle Bolton.
