Pace-Eggers
Description
Copy of a photograph taken in the late-19th century, which purports to be of the Kirkby Stephen Pace-Eggers, or Jolly Boys. They carry musical instruments (tambourine, fiddle and melodeon), and are dressed in costume as (left-right) Molly Brown-bags, Toss-pot, the Heavy Young Lad(?), Lord Collingwood(?), Lord Nelson and two other unidentified characters. An ms. note (in the hand of Werner Kissling) on the Photo File card on which this photograph is mounted states that it is not certain that the pace-egging team pictured are actually the Kirkby Stephen Jolly Boys, and that a Mrs. Brogden of Kirkby Stephen remembered the team as young lads aged from around 12-14 years old. All but two of the team pictured appear to be adults. However, given the popularity of the custom of pace-egging in the area, the group in the photograph may have come from a neighbouring village. Originally held in Photo File: Traditional Customs, Annual Fairs, Bonfires.
