International Phonetic Association Symbols
Description
Although separated into two physical file folders, these files were originally held as two folders within a single filing-cabinet file. The files contain typed, ms. and printed correspondence and related items concerning symbolisation in the LAE maps. The first file was originally labelled Map and IPA Symbols, and includes index cards with ms. notes on letters to be written by Stewart Sanderson and Tony Green; a printed sheet for Butler and Tanner's type sphere corrections; a printed brochure for the IBM electronic composer; photocopied and typed examples of symbols and keyboards; original and copy correspondence between Sanderson and Ian W. Mitchaell at Letraset on cartographic and IPA symbols (March 1974-August 1974); correspondence with Frank C. Heaton of F. C. Heaton on Zippatone sheets (August 1974-August 1975); correspondence with Rita M. Carey at the Monotype Corporation on IPA symbols (December 1974-May 1975); correspondence with David Abercrombie at the Department of Linguistics, University of Edinburgh (May 1976). The second file was originally labelled International Phonetic Ass., and contains correspondence between Sanderson and A. C. Grimson and John Wells of the International Phonetic Association regarding the use of IPA Principles (November 1976); and a photocopied sheet showing the stress and pronunciation of vowels, diphthongs and consonants. The files are arranged chronologically and by correspondent.
