Needle Supports (Handknitting)
Description
Five early needle supports from the Whitehead Collection at the Castle Museum, York. The supports include a bundle of sticks, or bundley sticks (probably elm), secured by wire or string; a bundle of sticks enclosed in a linen poke; a bundle of quills secured by wire or string; a bundle of straw enclosed in a linen poke; and a bundle of barley straw bound with wire or string. Three of the supports have curved needles inserted into the top. Also includes a roll of cloth (possibly to keep sticks and straw used as needle supports bound together) used in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Display labelled 19. Unmounted.
