Needle Supports (Handknitting)
Description
Seven carved wooden needle supports from Weardale (Durham), in the Whitehead Collection at the Castle Museum, York. The supports include an elm stick with base fashioned to accommodate a clue (or clew) holder; a mahogany stick with a deep slot for belt or waistband, a brass tube reinforcing the haft head, red flowers at the tip and a plant form on the base, a fretted pattern at the base, and inscription Mary Todd : A.D. 1832; an ash bladed support with gouge-cut decoration and un-turned haft; a mahogany stick with a caged ball, deep groove for belt or waistband, chip-carving, and base shaped to accommodate a clue (or clew) holder; a pear wood stick with cross and heart motif; a mahogany stick with all-over square and diagonal chip-carved patterns, deep groove for waist string, and ball cage; and a pear wood stick with base fashioned to hold the top arm of a bottom crook.
