St Catherine of Alexandria (fol. 251r)
Description
St Catherine kneels in prayer as an executioner prepares to behead her with a sword. Next to her is a broken wheel, the intended instrument of her martyrdom, but which broke instead and killed the executioners. In the sky an angel holds a hammer, for breaking the wheel. The glory of God is seen descending from heaven in rays of gold (and, formerly, silver ones). A castle is visible in the distance, behind a hilly landscape. Context: Breviary offices: St Catherine: Virginis eximi
