The Kellet Manuscript
Description
The first file contains a photocopy of a manuscript by G. R. Kellet, being a memoir of growing up in Hunslet, Leeds, in the 1920s and 1930s. Although biographical, the manuscript includes descriptions of slum areas of Leeds demolished from the late 1930s onwards, the River Aire, family life, activity on the streets of Leeds, children's games and Leeds City Market. Coopers Court, Hunslet, where Kellet lived in his youth, no longer exists, having been demolished during slum clearances in 1939/ 1940. He comments in his final chapter on improvements for children growing up in modern times. The second file contains a typed transcription of Kellet's manuscript, with chapter headings (194 leaves).
