The Fowler Manuscript
Description
Bound photocopy of Wilelmine Fowler's manuscript, 'Yorkshire Sayings and Superstitions Collected in the Neighbourhood of Wakefield' ( ca. 1890s). Fowler intended the manuscript for publication in the 'Folk-Lore Journal', as is apparent from a covering letter included in the copy, dated 28 Feburary 1894. The manuscript consists of information relating to manners and customs, belief and superstition in the Wakefield area, and includes sections on popular superstitions, ailments and traditional cures, marriage customs, funeral customs, wishes, calendar customs, ghost stories, riddles, sayings and rhymes, children's singing games and short glossaries of local terms for plants, animals and birds, and miscellaneous words.
