Description
This file contains a photocopy of a manuscript and newspaper cuttings compiled by a Mr. Mason ca. 1870s-1880s, which forms a collection of folklore items. Although varied, there is a regional element to some of the material relating to the Greater Manchester area, in particular the area around Stockport. The subjects include pace-egging; song; superstitions; songs about Guy Fawkes; weatherlore; luck; placenames; rhymes; Youlgreave Church; the zodiac; games; calendar customs; songs and rhymes about Christmas and May Day; Denton Chapel; the Heaton Chapel area and St. Thomas' Church; life in Reddish and the Thompson family (including some ms. by Mrs. M. Thompson); and Furrys. These papers are accompanied by an ms. index compiled by one of the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies archivists.
