The Courtney Manuscript and Related Papers

Description

This file contains papers relating to the republication of Margaret Courtney's 'Cornish Feasts and Folklore' (originally published Penzance: Beare, 1890). Tony Green, lecturer at the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS), was asked by Educational Publications of East Ardsley to write a foreword for this reprint, and the papers collected here are largely the result of his attempts to gather biographical information on Margaret Courtney. The first file contains a photocopy of the late 19th-century Courtney Manuscript held at Penzance Library, Cornwall, ([40], 315, [1] leaves). The manuscript is a copy of the original articles on which Courtney's 'Cornish Feasts and Folklore' was based, with annotations made for the published version. It also includes annotations made at a later date, possibly for a new edition that was never published. The second file contains correspondence and related papers directly concerning Tony Green's quest for biographical information on Margaret Courtney. It includes correspondence, 20 March 1973 - 19 June 1974, with R. D. Hale, County Librarian at Truro; the Cornishman newspaper; Mr. P. A. S. Pool of Penzance; Mr. M. Salvadori of Penzance; Mr. S. E. Schofield of Helston; Mr. H. L. Douch, Curator of the Royal Institute of Cornwall; Captain Ivan Agar Courtney; Mr. Ralph Steel, Honorary Librarian at Penzance Library; and members of the Julyans family (a family related to the Courtneys) in Cornwall. Also includes typed and ms. notes collected and made by Tony Green for his foreword to the reprint of 'Cornish Feasts and Folklore'. The correspondence is arranged chronologically.
