Regional Maps
Description
This file contains a collection of printed and published maps which appear to have been used during the mapping of fieldwork localities for the Survey of English Dialects (SED). SED localities are highlighted in ms. in red pencil/pen. The maps are as follows: - Ordnance SurveyQuarter Inch Map of Great Britain (4th edition): Sheet 1: The Border (1946)Sheet 2: England, North Central (1946)Sheet 3: England, North-East (1946)Sheet 6: North Midlands and Lincolnshire (1946); lacking front coverSheet 7: South Wales (1946)Sheet 8: Midlands (1946)Sheet 9: East Anglia (1946)Sheet 10: England, South-West (1946)Sheet 11: England, South (1945) - Esso Road Map: South and West England; section no. 3 (n.d.); 3 copiesWales and Midlands; section no. 4 (n.d.). Peter Wright was responsible for compiling a list of 300 localities to be investigated for the SED in 1949-1950. The ms. markings on the maps may have been made during this time.
