Fieldworkers' Expense Books
Description
This file contains notebooks belonging to Harold Orton and Stanley Ellis, recording expenses incurred during fieldwork trips for the Survey of English Dialects (SED). Orton's expense books cover the period 1949-1952 and therefore may relate, at least in part, to the testing of the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. They include expense claims for fieldwork and research trips in localities and counties throughout the SED network, with Yorkshire being most prominent, and evidence for Fritz Röhrer having undertaken a fieldwork trip to Cheshire with Orton. The first of Stanley Ellis's expense books covers the period 1952-1959, and also includes expenses incurred during fieldwork throughout the SED network. As well as showing Ellis's expenses, it records amounts of money issued to him by the University Bursar. (At this time Ellis was living in a caravan, whereby he was able to drive from locality to locality with no need for accommodation). The second expense book covers the period 1960-1965, and includes details of expenses incurred during a fieldwork trip to Cornwall with Martyn Wakelin in 1963. The accounts are all signed by Harold Orton, indicating that the expenses were inspected by him. Ellis's expense books are accompanied by an ms. contextual note added by him in 2003. The type of expenses incurred by Orton and Ellis, and by other SED fieldworkers, included petrol, breakdown repairs, accommodation and food, and drinks and gifts (such as tobacco) for informants.
