Pace Egg Plays

Description

This file contains items relating to pace egg plays, including transcriptions of play texts, and plays featuring St. George. This includes a copy of 'The Peace Egg, or St. George: An Easter Play' (Rochdale: Edwards & Bryning Ltd., n.d.), 8 pp.; typed text of a calling-on song sung by pace-eggers, from Mrs. Turnbull of Coniston (n.d.); typed text for 'Saint George, the Knights and the Dragon', an Easter play as performed by the pupils of Newhay County Council School (North Yorkshire) in April 1962, sent by Harry Drake to Stewart Sanderson with answers to the Easter Egg Survey and an accompanying typed letter (20 February 1963); a photocopy of typed text for 'The Pasche Egg Play', a composite version of the play as performed in Cumbria, assembled from versions performed at Ambleside, Askam, Marton, Pennington, Swarthmoor, Ulverston and Dalton (1965); mounted newspaper cuttings from the 'Yorkshire Post'and 'Yorkshire Evening Post', with images of performances of Pace Egg plays by pupils of Calder Vale High School and members of the Brighouse Children's Theatre (9 April 1966); a photocopy of an ms. pamphlet, 'Fragments of Pace Egg Plays, Plough Stots, Sword Dance and Songs', copied by Rennie Pickles and Patricia E. Pickles from a notebook kept at Cusworth Hall Museum, and focussing on the area around Riccall, ca. 1820, (November 1970), [2], 18 pp.; typed text for the Pace Egg play from Midgley, used by pace-egging pupils from Calder High School, and sent by Alfred Greenwood (April 1974), 7 pp.; a copy of 'We're Jolly Boys: An Introduction to Mumming and Pace-Egging', by John Boyd Hyland (Oldham: the author, 1977), [11] pp.; and a typed paper by Peter Stevenson on the Greenbank Primary School Pace Egg play, 1976, including a transcript of the play recorded on 7 April 1976, [8] leaves. File arranged chronologically.
