Description

Decoration: 22 full-page miniatures within arched compartments surrounded by full floral borders, and 22 historiated initials. The illuminations are probably by a French artist. Written in textualis. Principal contents: ff. 3r-14v Calendar; ff. 16r-27r The Fifteen Oes of St Bridget; ff. 29r-31v Prayers to the Holy Trinity; ff. 33r-52r Suffrages; ff. 53r-115r Hours of the Virgin; ff. 115v-126v Devotions to the Virgin; ff. 126v-129r O intemerata; ff. 129r-133v Obsecro te; ff. 133v-155v Prayers; ff. 157r-183r Penitential Psalms and Litany; ff. 184r-235v Office of the dead; ff. 237r-244v Psalms of the Passion; ff. 244v-265v Psalter of St Jerome. Prayers were added presumably in England for a female owner on f. 266r-v. Further prayers were added at the beginning of the 16th century in blank spaces on ff. 1v-2r, 31v-32r and 52r. From the library of Lord Brotherton. He had purchased the manuscript from the London book seller Chas. J. Sawyer in the 1920s. See for a fuller description: N. R.
