Bonfire Survey
Description
This file contains items relating to a collaborative survey of bonfire customs conducted for the Folk Life Survey through the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS) at Leeds, and the Department of English at University College, London (UCL). The file contains a typed copy of Annual Bonfires Questionnaire A and an accompanying typed circular letter; a typed letter on behalf of John McNeal Dodgson of the Survey of English Folklore at UCL to Stewart Sanderson, with typed transcripts of information received on the bonfire survey from informants in Kent, East Sussex and Gloucestershire (22 May 1967); ms., typed and photocopied responses to the questionnaire from informants throughout England, particularly Northern England (1967-1968); and printed maps of England and Wales, the Northern Counties, the West Midlands, the East Midlands and East Anglia, and the Southern Counties, completed in ms. by Carolyn Molloy-Morley, showing locations of particular annual bonfires. The aim of the survey was to collect information about regional patterns of bonfire customs, and to present the results in map form. It was intended that the maps would eventually form part of a projected 'European Atlas of Folklore and Ethnology'. The items in this file were originally housed in a folder labelled Bonfire Answers after Miss Molloy-Morley plus CM-Ms maps from UCL. File arranged as found.
