This file contains items relating to New Year, Valentine's Day and Shrove Tuesday customs. This includes a typed copy of a letter from Clare Elkin to Stewart Sanderson on the custom of painting New Year greetings for luck on doors and gates in Skipsea, East Yorkshire (12 February 1970); Tony Green's ms. notes on mumming and molly dancing at New Year, collected from Janet Douglas (26 November 1975); mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings from the 'Dalesman', 'Country Life', 'The Times', the 'Yorkshire Evening Post' and 'The Guardian', on New Year customs in Driffield, East Yorkshire (photocopy), the Pembrokeshire custom of sprinkling lucky water in the New Year, beliefs regarding kneeling oxen, the burning of L'hom Strom (i.e. straw man) in Scuol, Switzerland, Valentine's Day, children's customs on Shrove Tuesday in Driffield, East Yorkshire (photocopy), and the Shrove Tuesday football match at Sedgefield, County Durham; and a photocopy of an article from the 'Leicester Mercury' on the Hallaton Bottle-Kicking and Hare-Pie Scramble File contents retained in original classification order, and chronologically within this.
