McCaffery: A Study in the Variation and Function of a Ballad
Description
This file contains a photocopy of Tony Green's typed paper (with ms. corrections) on the ballad 'McCaffery', [54] leaves. The paper consists of a discussion of eight oral versions of the ballad, including its historicity, function, variants, the characteristics of the descent groups and the idea of 'McCaffery' as a historical ballad, in the contexts of song traditions in the United States and Ireland, and other aspects of oral tradition. The file also contains a photocopy of a newspaper article written by Gerard Corr for the 'Lancashire Evening Post', on Private Patrick McCafferyand the story behind the ballad.
