This file contains two photocopies of Alan Lomax's paper on the importance of the study of folk music in its context, i.e. as a form of human behaviour, from 'Ethnology', volume I, number 4 (October 1962), pp. 425-451. The paper discusses the cantometric system of rating song performance according to qualitative judgements, cantometric coding sheets and their use, musical acculturation, Pygmy-Bushman versus Western European song style, the bardic style of Asia, Native American and African song patterns.
