The Lore, Language and Games of Children

Description

This file contains a photocopy of Catherine Wellsted's typed study of children's playground and street activities, undertaken as part of a course at the Eaton Hall College of Education in Retford (Nottinghamshire), and submitted in 1971. The study is based on fieldwork data collected from pupils at schools in Mattersey, Austerfield (South Yorkshire), Misson and Harworth , supplemented by information collected from other students and Catherine Wellsted's family. It is divided into chapters which discuss starting a game; actual games, classified into chasing, catching, seeking, racing, duelling and guessing; nonsense rhymes; parodies of popular songs and carols; skipping and other rhymes; and jeers and torments. The study also includes ms. accounts by children of games played and how to play them, and black and white photographs of children at play.
