Survey of Vernacular Architecture, 1980-1981
Description
This file contains photocopies of two papers submitted for the FLS I student exercise for the undergraduate degree in Dialect and Folk Life Studies at the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies (IDFLS). The exercise consisted of a survey of vernacular architecture in a specific locality, undertaken in accordance with R.W. Brunskill's scheme for the recording of English vernacular architecture as outlined in his 'Illustrated Handbook of Vernacular Architecture' (see LAVC/FLF/2/7/2). The first paper is a study of vernacular architecture in Lavenham and Ipswich, Suffolk, undertaken by Sharon Niccolls. The survey includes details of place, surveyor and date, materials used, date of construction, and graphs denoting Brunskill's classification of doorways, windows and building type (see LAVC/FLF/2/7/2). These are accompanied by photographic images and ms. diagrams of the buildings surveyed. The second paper is a study of vernacular architecture in the parish of Richards Castle, near Ludlow, Herefordshire, undertaken by Karen Reader. The survey includes an ms. introduction, ms. maps of the area surveyed, details of place, surveyor and date, materials used and date of construction, and graphs denoting Brunskill's classification of doorways, windows and building type (see LAVC/FLF/2/7/2), and additional ms. notes on each of the buildings. These are accompanied by photographic images of the buildings surveyed. This file also includes a typed appendix consisting of agreements and bonds for building involving John Gylley of Ludlow and Richard Salway of Riccards Castle, from 1660-1670. File arranged as found.
