Description
This file contains a photocopy of a paper submitted for the FLS I student exercise for the undergraduate degree in Dialect and Folk Life Studies at the Institute of Dialect and Folk Life Studies. The exercise consisted of a survey of vernacular architecture in a specific locality, undertaken in accordance with R.W. Brunskill's scheme for the recording of English vernacular architecture as outlined in his 'Illustrated Handbook of Vernacular Architecture' (see LAVC/FLF/2/7/2). The paper in this file constitutes a study of the vernacular architecture of Guisborough, Cleveland, undertaken by Jayne Halliday. The survey includes an ms. introduction, details of place, surveyor and date, materials used and date of construction, graphs denoting Brunskill's classification of doorways, windows and building type (see LAVC/FLF/2/7/2), and an ms. conclusion. These are accompanied by photographic images of the buildings surveyed. The file also includes a copy of the recording sheet devised by Brunskill.
