Description
This file contains photocopies of ms. and printed carol texts and tunes, collected by Ian Russell from informants in the Sheffield area, especially Lol Loy (i.e. Lawrence Loy) of Wadsley. The photocopies were made some time in the early 1970s. The date range for the original items is 1889-1953. The file includes a photocopy of the index and pp. 1-2 of Lol Loy's ms. carol word book; a photocopy of ms. carol texts and tunes by Lol Loy, copied from Walter Colley of Wadsley; a photocopy of an advertisement for Christmas music; a photocopy of 'The Invicta Penny Book of Carols for Christmas' (Retford: John Ward, n.d.), 22 pp., lent by Lol Loy; a photocopy of selected items from 'Christmas Carols', Enlarged Edition (Manchester: Marks & Spencer Ltd., n.d.), lent by Lol Loy; a photocopy of 'Two Favourite Songs: The Mistletoe Bough and The Gipsy Girl', Albion Edition no. 37 (Manchester: Marks & Spencer Ltd, n.d.), lent by Lol Loy; a photocopy of 'Cornish Carols, Part I', composed by W. Eade et al. (Truro: Heard & Sons, 1889), 46 pp.; a photocopy of 'Cornish Carols, Part II', composed by W. B. Ninnis, et al. (Truro: Heard & Sons, n.d.), 44 pp.; a photocopy of 'A Garland of the Old Castleton Christmas Carols', edited with notes by W. H. Shawcross (Hemsworth: C. E. Turner, 1904), 12 pp. (text only); a photocopy of 'Old Castleton Christmas Carols', Coronation Edition (1953), in effect a re-issuing of Shawcross's 'Garland', including song tunes, by J. W. Haydock, vicar of Castleton, lent by Iain Beckett of Wadsley; a photocopy of a copy of 'The Mistletoe Bough' in the possession of Lol Loy; and a photocopy of an ms. collection of carols in the possession of Mina Dyson(wife of Ernest Dyson) of Stannington, given to her by her uncle ca. 1890. File contents retained in the order as found.
