Herefordshire Response Books
Description
Response books, completed in ms. phonetic script, recording the answers of informants from Survey of English Dialects (SED) localities in Herefordshire to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. Responses were recorded by SED fieldworkers Donald Sykes and Peter Wright at Brimfield, Weobley, Cradley, Checkley, Longtown, Whitchurch and Lyonshall. The response book for Lyonshall recorded by Peter Wright in 1952 may have been based on an early version of the published Questionnaire. Lyonshall is not included in the SED Basic Material. Each response book bears ms. editorial markings relating to the editing of the recorded responses for publication in the SED West Midlands Counties Basic Material volume. Response books for Herefordshire were edited by Dieter Bothe in 1963-1964, and by Michael Barry in 1966 (Wright/Lyonshall). The response books are retained in the numerical order assigned to SED localities, 15 He 1-7.
