Kent Response Books
Description
Response books, completed in ms. phonetic script, recording the answers of informants from Survey of English Dialects (SED) localities in Kent to the Dieth-Orton Questionnaire. Responses were recorded by SED fieldworkers Peter Wright (Farningham, 1952) and Michael Barry at Stoke, Farningham, Staple, Warren Street, Denton, Goudhurst and Appledore. Each response book bears ms. editorial markings relating to the editing of the recorded responses for publication in the SED Southern Counties Basic Material volume. Response books for Kent were edited by Henk Kylstra in 1959-1960, and by Martyn Wakelin (Stoke only) in 1961. The response book for Stoke includes an ms. note by Wakelin concerning an editorial problem. The response books are retained in the numerical order assigned to SED localities, 35 K 1-7.
