Quoits: The Poddle
Description
Adult male holding a walking stick as a marker at which pocket knives are thrown to decide turns and partners at the start of a quoits game. Four knives can be seen lodged in the ground near to the walking stick. This process is known as the poddle. The game is being played on a grass verge next to the road at Castle Bolton ( Wensleydale). The pin (stick) and quoits from a previous game can be seen on the grass in the foreground. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1764 and LAVC/PHO/P1766. With ms. note. On the back of the card is a Yorkshire dialect account in ms. of a conversation about starting a game of quoits.
