Quoits: The Poddle
Description
Adult males deciding turns and partners at the start of a quoits game. The men have used a walking stick as a marker, at which pocket knives have been thrown in order to decide turns. This process is known as the poddle. One of the men is has removed a knife from the ground, and hands it back to its owner. The game is being played on a grass verge next to the road at Castle Bolton ( Wensleydale). Quoits from a previous game can be seen on the grass in the foreground.
