Annunciation to the Virgin (fol. 39r)
Description
The miniature depicts Angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Christ to the Virgin Mary. Gabriel, with green and orange wings, holds a scroll that reads "Aue gracia plena dominus tecum" (abbreviated and only partly in view). God, wearing a triple tiara, blesses the scene from the window. The Holy Ghost, in the form of a dove, descends from God. Mary kneels under a pink canopy, by a small table on which a book lies open. There is a pot of lilies between the two figures. The border is decorated with a grotesque, small animals, strawberries and flowers. Context: Hours of the Virgin: Matins: Domine labia mea aperies
