Wood-Armed Dales Cart
Description
Detail view of the axle of an old wood-armed cart, typical of the Yorkshire Dales, at Muker ( Swaledale). The wood-armed cart is the oldest of three types of Dales cart, and is considered to be the most suitable on the area's rough roads due to the flexibility of the timber. This particular cart was last used at Shaw Gill Head, and was sold by Mr. John Tom Rutter of Gunnerside to a buyer in Muker twenty years before the photograph was taken.
