Wood-Armed Dales Cart
Description
Close-up view of old wood-armed cart, typical of the Yorkshire Dales, at Muker ( Swaledale). Various parts of the cart are labelled in ms. The wood-armed cart is the oldest of three types of Dales cart, and is considered to be the most suitable on the area's rough roads due to the flexibility of the timber. This particular cart was last used at Shaw Gill Head, and was sold by Mr. John Tom Rutter of Gunnerside to a buyer in Muker twenty years before the photograph was taken. Mounted on Photo File card with LAVC/PHO/P1195, and contact prints of LAVC/PHO/P1203 and LAVC/PHO/P1204. With notes on Dales carts and wood-armed carts, and detailed ms. diagram of a wood-arm in the hand of Werner Kissling. Card 1 in a series of 2. Originally held in Photo File: Farm Carts.
