Description
This file includes an ms. letter from Gillian Bulmer to Stewart Sanderson on names of apples (12 November 1975); a photocopy of Grace Pleasant Wellborn's paper on plantlore in Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Scarlet Letter', from the 'Southern Folk Quarterly' (June 1963), pp. 160-167; David McLintock's article on why white heather is lucky, extracted from 'Country Life' (15 January 1970), p. 159; and mounted magazine and newspaper cuttings (some photocopied) from the 'Dalesman', 'John Peel Jottings', 'The Guardian', 'Country Life' and the 'Yorkshire Evening Post', on cuckoo pint and elder, the use of mustard as a poultice, cowslip, forced rhubarb in West Yorkshire, cherry stalk tea, the leafing of oak and ash trees, white heather and luck, Anne Muirhead's thesis on plant lore, blackberries, mistletoe, knotted trees and the Towton rose. File contents retained in original classification order, and chronologically within this.
