Sheep Farming in Littondale
Description
This file contains a photographic record of seasonal activities on Guy Ingleby's hill farm at Nether Hesleden, Littondale, North Yorkshire. The photographs were taken by Edmund Williamson, one-time Bursar of the University of Leeds, over a two-year period in order to obtain images covering all seasons. The photographs are pasted in to the volumes, and are all largely the same size (ca. 19.2 cm x 24.4 cm). The first volume includes a typed introduction, which describes the farm, its surroundings and history, farming practices and stock. The photographs in both volumes depict views of the farm, stock, and the various activities undertaken throughout the year, including milking cattle, winter feeding of sheep, lambing, a visit from the mole-catcher, driving ewes and lambs into the meadows, shearing, taking the flock onto the hills, dipping and vaccinating sheep, care and management of the meadows, cattle-grazing, calving, taking sheep to the market and general life and duties around the farm. Volume 1 contains 54 photographs; Volume 2 contains 53 photographs.
